Mission The Bemis Center states, "The spirit and programs of the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts are based on the conviction that exceptional talent deserves to be supported. Our practical commitment to this belief is achieved by providing well-equipped studio spaces, living accommodations and a monthly stipend to artists who are awarded residencies. These artists come from around the world to work within a supportive community of like-minded people. The atmosphere and environment offer an ideal situation for creative growth and experimentation and encourage artists to confront new challenges."
History In 1981 artists Jun Kaneko, Tony Hepburn, Lorne Falke and Ree Schonlau founded the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. It was initially the center was a Artist-in-Industry program which allowed artists to create art at different industrial sites. However, throughout the 1980's, many people in the fine arts community felt that it was important to foster new art, which in turn, started an "artist residency" program. Today, this program accepts over 600 applications annually from applicants all over the world.
Today Today one can go to see some great contemporary art at the Bemis Center. The art consists of all different kinds of mediums including video and even performance art! The Bemis Center has over 700 members today and gets over 1200 visitors a month. It provides over 100,000 square feet for exhibitons and is open to the public. They are open Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m-5 p.m.
