Boys Town
Boys Town (formerly Girls and Boys Town) is the nation's largest not-for-profit institution that aims to care for abused, abandoned, and neglected boys and girls. The national headquarters of Girls and Boys Town is the village of Boys Town, Nebraska which is located in West Omaha near 14100 Crawford Street.
The original Boys Town was founded as a boys orphanage in 1921 by Father Edward J. Flanagan, a Roman Catholic priest working in Omaha. What once started as a small homeless shelter, is now a nationwide organization with residences in 15 states. Fr. Flanagan is accredited with changing the face of childcare. The Boys Town campus has a Hall of History, the All-American Rose and Biblical Gardens, the Leon Myers Stamp Center and more. Visitors can even enjoy a bit of Hollywood: Spencer Tracy's Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan in the 1938 movie "Boys Town" is on display. The Boys Town movie also starred Mickey Rooney, Henry Hull and Gene Reynolds.
The beautiful campus is now to the public as a National Historic Landmark and is open year-round. Admission is free, guided tours are available in June, July and August. Phone: (402) 498-1770, Fax: (402) 498-1348
