Cinco de Mayo

Cinco De Mayo, which means May 5th in English, is the national Mexican independence holiday. Even though it is a Mexican holiday it is widely celebrated throughout the United States. The holiday is even celebrated in Omaha, primarily the festivities take place in South Omaha, where in recent decades has seen a great influx of Hispanics. The largest celebration takes place on 24th street beginning with a parade. Near by, 22nd street will be shut down and a carnival will set up that will stretch roughly around a mile. In addition, the South Omaha campus of Metropolitan Community College will also be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with live music and a dramatic performance. The event is free and open to the public.
