Help:How to categorize articles
Categorization of articles is important for people to find information in the Omaha wiki. To add an article to a category, add [[Category:categoryname]] at the end of the article where categoryname is the name of the category to which you want to add the article.
[edit] Guidelines and things to remember
- Categorization matters: Every article and category should be in at least one category. This creates a hierarchy that is extremely useful for navigation as well as classification. The uncategorized articles and uncategorized categories pages should be empty! Ideally, images should be categorized too.
- Capitalization matters: "Fast Food" is different from "Fast food". You should preview the page to be sure the category name (at the bottom of the page) appears in blue (the category already exists) vs. red (it is a new category).
- However, it is possible that a red category is in use. If the category page has no content and is not itself categorized, it will display red. Please categorize categories like this!
- Capitalization format: Capitalize only proper names and (optionally) the first word of the category. In the example above, "Fast Food" would be incorrect. If "fast food" is given, the wiki software will correct it to "Fast food".
- Multi-categorization: You can put a given article into any number of categories, but each one requires a statement in the format above. When deciding on a category for an article, choose the most specific category, not the broad category and subcategory. For example, when adding an article about a seafood restaurant place it in the seafood category and not the general restaurants category as well.
