Kenefick Park

Kenefick Park is a park located adjacent to Lauritzen Gardens, just off of I-80 and overlooking the Missouri River. Kenefick park holds two of the greatest locomotives ever to exist with the Union Pacific Railroad. One of these locomotives is Big Boy #4023, the largest steam locomotive ever built, and the other is Centennial #6900, the largest diesel locomotive ever built. These locomotives, first situated at the original Kenefick park east of downtown Omaha, were moved to the Durham Western Heritage Museum in 2002. However, in Fall of 2004, Union Pacific and the City of Omaha decided to relocate again to what is now known as the new Kenefick Park. Big Boy and Centennial were lifted from the Durham Western Heritage Museum and carried by cranes and transported down 13th street in Omaha to the new location. This was a sight not often seen, and quite an extraordinary event. The park opened in the Fall of 2005.
