National Register of Historic Places
The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects worthy of preservation. The National Register was established in 1966 with the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Out of the over one million properties on the National Register, 80,000 are listed individually, the others are contributing members within historic districts. Each year 30,000 properties join the National Register as part of districts or through individual listings.
There are over fifty Omaha locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Three have have been designated as National Historic Landmarks by the United States Secretary of the Interior for their historical significance.
