The Center Shopping Center

The Center Shopping Center in a 1950s postcard.

The Center Shopping Center was built in 1955 on the northeast corner of 42nd and Center Streets and was the first shopping center in the world of its kind: an enclosed shopping center built around an anchor store. The facility included, at various times, Kilpatrick's (later Younker's) department store, as well as J.C. Penney's, a grocery store, a dime store, and the many other shops and services typical of suburban malls. It also sheltered a fine restaurant (The Cimarron Room) and a large bowling facility (Sky Lanes) on the top floor.

The Center was designed and built by pioneer developer, John Wiebe, who went on to develop the Westroads Mall in the 1960s. Its compact, multi-tiered parking facility is distinctive. Today, however, The Center houses mostly offices and a few other services. The facility suffered at least two severe fires, which changed its interior complexion over the years. Occupancy peaked in the early 1960s, and again in the late 1970s after the second fire.
