[edit] History
While attempting to capitalize on the gold rush of the west in 1852, Henry Wells and William Fargo founded Wells, Fargo & Co. in San Francisco. Thier original business offered banking (buying gold, and selling paper bank drafts as good as gold), and express (rapid delivery of the gold and anything else valuable). Its reputation built around its ability to quickly deal with people's money, and soon, the stage coach became its immortal symbol.
Wells Fargo soon took controlled all the major western stage lines. Stages took the ground on over 3000 miles of territory, from California to Nebraska.
With the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, Wells Fargo jumped to the rails. In 1888, the company got involved in the steel business in the Northeast, and was first nationwide express company.
By 1910, Wells Fargo had a network of 6000 locations, including all major mining operations from Alaska to down to Arizona. In 1918, they were part of 10,000 communities.
That same year, the federal government took over the nations expressways in reaction to World War I, and Wells Fargo was left with only its San Francisco bank.
